About Sacai
Sacai is a Japanese luxury fashion brand known for hybrid designs that combine contrasting elements. Abe worked at Comme des Garçons for eight years under Rei Kawakubo before launching her label. The brand name has no specific meaning, chosen simply because Abe liked the sound. Sacai’s signature aesthetic involves splicing unexpected fabrics, mixing sportswear with tailoring, layering different garment types, and creating “”hybrid”” pieces that appear to be two items in one. Collections feature MA-1 bomber jackets with knit backs, pleated skirt-pants, dresses combined with shirting, and sneakers merged with formal shoe elements. Sacai shows at Paris Fashion Week (since 2011) and maintains flagship stores in Tokyo, Paris, New York, London, Hong Kong, and Beijing. The brand collaborates extensively with sportswear companies: Nike (multiple sneaker collaborations starting 2014, including the LDWaffle and VaporWaffle), The North Face, Moncler (Moncler Genius project), Carhartt WIP, Jean Paul Gaultier (2023 guest designer for JPG haute couture),Fragment Design, KAWS, and Porter. Sacai operates both women’s and menswear lines. In 2024, Abe was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government for contributions to fashion. The brand is known for meticulous construction, innovative pattern-making, and unexpected material combinations. Price points position Sacai in the contemporary luxury segment (typically 500-3000 euros per piece). The brand appeals to fashion enthusiasts seeking conceptual design, craftsmanship, and pieces that challenge conventional garment construction while remaining wearable. Sacai maintains independence and continues to be led by Abe’s singular vision.
