About Kin Chan Coedel
Kin Chan Coedel is a Hong Kong-born photographer based between Paris and Shanghai, specializing in documentary and fashion photography. Coedel has a background in womenswear and textile design, which informs his visual approach to photography. He never initially intended to become a photographer but discovered his passion after finding a twelve-dollar film camera at a Seattle flea market. His work focuses on minority ethnic groups, ancient traditions, strong women, and communities deeply connected to natural environments. Coedel won the Prix du Public at the 38th edition of Hyères Festival in 2023 for his series “Dyal Thak,” which documents Tibetan nomads and the yak khullu (yak yarn) craft community in Ritoma village. He first traveled to Tibet in 2021 to connect with Norlha Atelier, a fashion label supporting traditional craftsmanship. His Tibetan work captures the intimacy of daily life, moving between documentary and staged storytelling with attention to texture, composition, and the relationship between people and landscape. Coedel’s photographs have been published in Atmos, National Geographic, BJP (British Journal of Photography), T Magazine, Vogue US, Vogue China, and Wallpaper. He is represented by ARTWORLD Agency and maintains his portfolio at kinbykin.com. Coedel’s approach emphasizes that photographs are “given” by nature, subjects, weather, and light rather than “created,” reflecting his philosophy of trust and sensitivity. His work explores themes of cultural preservation, environmental connection, and the tension between ancient traditions and modernization, particularly in Inner Mongolia and various Tibetan Autonomous Regions. Coedel collaborates closely with communities, living with subjects to capture authentic moments.
